Walter Cheney’s story started 24 years ago when he was a young man watching his older brother’s build trucks to pull, drag and play in the mud. He was intrigued by the loud roar of the engines, the sheer excitement of competition as we attended the pulls or drags or even the mug bogs. It’s always been in his blood. So as the years went on he eventually was old enough to start building his own trucks. He worked hard and with his families support starting competing at the age of 18.
Walter kept on working at getting better. Many ups and downs as they all have experienced in racing. It took a lot of work and dedication but they grew as a team and as a family. Walter reached out for help about 10 years ago. He realized if he wanted to continue to grow in this industry he would need sponsors. So he put together a list of accomplishments and sent out letters to dozens of companies. Walter asked for help locally. He just needed a little help.
Most letters went unanswered. The replies he was getting back were “I am sorry” or “we do not sponsor.” Yet as weeks turned into months he kept sending letters and now emails. He tried anyone who was connected to the industry. Months passed with no help. Then one day Walter received an email saying “please contact us”. So he did and that was the start of an amazing journey down the sponsorship proposal road.
Years have passed. Walter has done well. Several top three finishes. A few trophies. And most importantly much needed experience! So back to the shop and more changes each season. As Walter figured out what worked and what didn’t he started to finish better each season. It was a very long, expensive road but it was his driving force to continue his family tradition and continue to get better.
As seasons passed Walter gained popularity. He picked up sponsor after sponsor. Walter decided he needed a name so people could have something to share instead of just a story. Venom was born. This name came to him one day as he was watching a show with his son. Seeing how he was using the Nissan Titan platform he was considered the outcast or outsider among all the Chevy, Ford and Dodge owners he wanted a name that was going to fit. Venom was an alien. An outcast. It was perfect!
Venom has been in service now since late 2009. She (yes she) has had over 400 hooks in her career, earning Dozens of points championships. This is an incredible amount of hooks for a daily driven truck. Walter does his best to keep her in top shape and she just keeps going. Walter’s hats off to Nissan for building such an amazing platform. He also wanted to race in the off season of pulling and drag racing was the next option. So off they went with this pull truck to try and Go Fast! It took them over a year of trial and error to get the drag racing thing figured out but after they learned a few good lessons they started to finally go fast. They set the record for fastest NA Titan 4×4 in the world in 2015. In both 1/8 mile and ¼ mile. This was a huge accomplishment for them and one they will never forget.
Then came Ice drags and Truck shows. Well this winning streak has continued. They won the LGWC Ice Drags v8 class. This was a fun experience and they look forward to more years of this sport. Then comes the Truck shows. They entered their first large show up in Canada. Theys took best truck and that hooked them on showing Venom as another way to get exposure and grow their race legacy. After many wins at many shows they hit our pinnacle when they won Best import 4×4 at the Carlisle all Truck Nationals in 2016. Memories they will never forget.
Now it’s been 24 years since Walter has started his journey down this amazing road and it’s just getting bigger and better every season. His brother Alex Cheney has started pulling again and his 2016 Nissan Titan (Black Widow) has proven its worth already by winning every points championship they entered last season! Truly an amazing platform. They have a lot of work to try and keep winning but they are dedicated to what they do and will continue to get better as they go with this new Daily driven diesel Pull truck. Keep an eye out for Black Widow in the future! Bigger and better things to come for this truck.
Walter has started his newest venture this season by building his first ¾ ton truck. No it’s not for him. It’s for his Wife Amber. She has shown so much interest and done so well driving Venom at some of the pulls.
( a 1st,2nd and 3rd place finish the three times she pulled) that she deserves her own truck! (Havok) is born! This 2004 Silverado 2500 will be built for her to race and pull. Walter is extremely excited to see her career grow and how it will feel to watch the woman he loves kick some butt! Walter would like to send out a huge thanks to all his sponsors! Without them they could not do what they do. They have kept his families dream alive and for that he is eternally grateful!
In memory of Pauline Cheney who was taken by Cancer in 2014. Love you mom.
